Studies in the desert of Merzouga, Morocco, by the Catalan Ornithological Institute have helped to understand the variety of strategies of small birds when crossing unfavourable and inhospitable areas while in spring migration. Small oasis and even single trees with limited vegetation are key for their survival. Regular ringing at Yasmina ringing station has revealed some interesting differences among species.
